Nine days after Sony's PlayStation Network was hacked and six days after Sony shut down both the PlayStation Network and Qriocity services... Sony finally admitted that there was a security breach...

Unidentified hackers broke into the network and stole your personal information and Sony waited 9 days to bother to tell you... in all fairness it took them a while to figure out what happened, but still, you'd think they would want their 70 million users to know immediately that their information could have been compromised.

Sony wasn't even sure that they were hacked at first... they knew something was wrong and that it may take a couple days to get back online, but they didn't know that they had actually been hacked. They really weren't that worried about it, unlike XBox, Sony doesn't charge for its network service. It makes money selling you games and services, so members don't usually enter their credit card information to get Network service... I don't think Sony thought the hack was that big of a deal since people don't pay for the service... until they finally figured out what had really happened.

Now everyone seems to be confused, especially PlayStation Network users. Sony claims that they've hired some "recognized security firm" to conduct a complete investigation into what happened and that they have taken steps to enhance security and strengthen network infrastructure.

They can't tell yet if the hackers got your credit card numbers, it's possible... some members use their credit cards to buy services online... but they know for sure that they did get all the information necessary to open a credit card up in your name, or take out a loan, or steal your identity. Hackers for sure got information like: name, address, country, email addy, birthday, and your PlayStation username, password and all that crap.

For those of you who use the same password for EVERYTHING that means they can access your email, and other online services where you might use your email and password to login like Amazon, Facebook, PayPal and God knows what else.

I've heard rumors of arrests, but the FBI confirmed that there have been NO arrests. PlayStation has pissed off hackers for threatening to "ban for life" some hackers who had published a rootkit for PlayStation 3.

Hacktivist group Anonymous in America vowed revenge, but quickly announced that they had nothing to do with the hack that actually took place.
Perhaps an off-shoot of Anonymous in America? I honestly don't know.

If you're interested in finding out what you can do and if you are save check out this article... it's full of useful information. You are also invited to please contact PlayStation at 1-800-345-7669 if you have any questions about the hack.

I also saw online that XBox has issued some kind of security alert to its members following the PlayStation hack.

Who do you think is responsible for the hack? Are you on the PlayStation Network? Do you think your information has been compromised? Did you change your password? Are you worried? Are they making a big deal out of nothing? What are you doing to protect yourself online?

I dont know where you go this information, but Anonymous does not aim to take everyones credit card numbers and etc. Actually they didnt aim to take anything. Like you said, sony wanted to put a ban for life on all hackers. This apparently pissed off Anonymous, so then anonymous hacked psn to show how strong they are.
